Colorado Voices: Building Back Better After the Marshall Fire

Wednesday September 7th
The Rebuilding Better Residential Workshop Series is continuing into fall 2022. The next workshop will be on Wednesday, September 7 and will include a special screening of the recently published Rocky Mountain PBS documentary, Colorado Voices: Building Back Better After the Marshall Fire. After the documentary screening, those featured in the program will be available to answer questions about Passive House building standards and certification.

Workshop 1: Optimizing Comfort & Construction Cost Savings in Your New Home

The June 1st workshop covered content from Chapter 1: Building a Healthy Home and Chapter 4: Finding Your Team of EnergySmart’s RebuildingBetter.org website.

Experts presented on how to optimize construction cost savings and make your new home as comfortable as possible.
Speakers included: Robby Schwarz of Boulder County EnergySmart, Frank Wetenkamp of the Colorado Green Building Guild and Erik Straite on behalf of Xcel Energy. Sustainability and Planning & Building staff were available to answer resident questions along with experts.

Workshop 2: Materials and Equipment for a Resilient Rebuild

The July 13th workshop included experts from EnergySmart who provided an overview of energy efficient equipment, such as heat pumps for space heating and cooling (both air source and ground source) and heat pump water heaters. Additionally, there was be an induction cooktop demonstration and experts were available to answer questions about energy efficiency technology and equipment.

Experts from Xcel Energy and the Colorado Energy Office also be discussed the rebuilding rebates and incentives available to residents.

Workshop 3: Maximizing Rebuilding Incentives

The August 3rd workshop attendees learned about the key decision points in the rebuilding process and when to make those decisions to maximize the incentives offered, including when to apply for rebates, grants, loans and when to bring in energy raters, builders and other members of the rebuilding team. Next, attendees heard from a panel of energy raters about how raters work with homeowners and builders to maximize the energy efficiency of the home design.

Experts included representatives from Xcel Energy and the Colorado Energy Office to answer questions about the rebates, incentives, grants and loans available for rebuilding.
